The Riensberg Cemetery is one of Bremen’s park-like cemeteries and was opened in 1875. A network of water bodies runs across the cemetery, consisting of a ditch along Riensberger Straße and a larger body of water, Lake Riensberger. With an extensive survey of the condition of the water bodies in 1998, a basis has been created to improve the general condition of the water bodies in the Riensberg Cemetery with targeted rehabilitation and restoration measures. In addition to various small decentralized measures, a Neptune soil filter was also built in 2001 to treat the water from Lake Riensberg. Due to the high nutrient supply, the filter material became saturated around 2015, the filter performance was degraded and the facility was shut down. In 2021, the Neptune filter was finally renewed and would be commissioned in the spring of 2022.
