Ruds Vedby is a small town in West Zealand in eastern Denmark. Ruds Vedby Friluftsbad, together with the nearby schools and sports facilities, provides the setting for a very active club life every summer.

The usable water area is about 397 m² and which includes the swimming pool and toddler pool areas. The purification of the water in the natural outdoor pool takes place without any chemical disinfectants, but through natural self-cleaning mechanisms in the open water as well as due to the microorganisms on the gravel surfaces of the filter material (biofilm). This biofilm removes germs, algae and other biomass from the water and mineralizes and binds them partly by chemical/physical processes. The wooden decks and the sunbathing areas around the sand-filled non-swimmer area and the swimmer area creates a perfect ambience for a perfect summer excursion. The bath was realized together with our Danish partner Junckerhaven.

Ruds Vedby is the first bath with biological water treatment in Denmark, thus an intensive coordination with the National Board of Health was necessary. After several hygiene workshops, all stakeholders agreed upon the FLL guidelines as of 2011. The efforts were worth it and today the bath works flawlessly.

In addition, there was a demand from the operators, that the pool should consume as minimal amount of electricity as possible. The maximum energy consumption should not exceed 12 kWh/d. Thanks to the innovative low-energy concept which made it possible to meet this requirement and still heat the building using solar thermal energy.

Polyplan planned and tendered the entire open space planning and pool technology, and the construction phase was supervised in cooperation with our Danish partner Junckerhaven. The pool is managed by the Polyplan-Kreikenbaum pool monitoring team and has a high level of operational reliability.
